Wiley comes from a prestigous family. His ancestors were very active in early American history. Some were congressmen, some were reverands, one was the president of Harvard. Many American historical sites are named after these Mathers'.

In this same letter, Claris indicated that Wiley and "Dollie" had 15 children, including two or three sets of twins who died very young. The spelling of this woman's name is uncertain. Her name may have been Lula or Luella. Dolly was a beautiful woman. She had several children and died during childbirth.
